Gulfstream Opens New $5.5 Million Aircraft Refurbishment and Completions Support Facility In Savannah, Georgia
Aerospace Industry's Most Modern Facility Positions Gulfstream for Continued Growth of Refurbishment and Service Business
Savannah, GA, April 7, 2000 – Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has opened a new refurbishment and completions support facility in Savannah, Ga. The 53,650-square-foot Consolidated Shop Facility significantly enhances Gulfstream's refurbishment and service support capability and incorporates interior wood, cabinetry, upholstery and other workshops that support aircraft interior completions in Savannah.
"With our aircraft completions business running smoothly, Gulfstream has turned its attention towards building and investing in the aircraft refurbishment business," said Larry Flynn, senior vice president of aircraft services. "With this new facility and a two-fold increase in employees devoted to refurbishments, we expect to build a substantial refurbishment business here in Savannah over the next few years."
The Consolidated Shop Facility also was designed to consolidate the numerous completion and service shops in Savannah under the roof of a modern facility and streamline their operation. The new facility eliminates the need for leased space and temporary buildings previously used for the wood, trim and carpet shops and includes a dedicated refurbishment capability.
"As our business has grown, our support shops and the number of people assigned to them have increased as well," said Joe Lombardo, senior vice president of operations. "The Consolidated Shop reduces outsourcing requirements, accommodates more refurbishment business, increases our workforce efficiency, and provides a safer and cleaner environment for our employees."
As new Gulfstream V and IV-SP aircraft come off the Savannah assembly line, Gulfstream completion centers fabricate and install custom interiors to each owner's specifications. Gulfstream centers completed more than 70 aircraft interiors and exterior paint schemes in 1999.
